Make A Difference Day

On Saturday October 23, 2010 North West Ohio OBB VISTA's participated in the Make A Difference Day event in Findlay Ohio. The event titled "1Matters Project Connect." Project Connect is an event set aside to encourage citizens to recognize the housing challenges facing residents in Hancock County. The Hancock County Housing Coalition is sponsoring a rally and event at the Dock at St. Mark's United Methodist Church.

  • Each year, the Hancock County Housing Consortium counts the number of homeless men, women, and children in Hancock County.  There were 123 people in shelters or on the streets in January of 2010.
  • Hope House served 2,393 people with shelter, housing, education, and referral information.
  • Out of 6,172 students in Findlay City Schools, 2,552 children are on the free and reduced lunch program. That is a whopping 41% of area youth. During June & July, the summer food program at Glenwood school served 2,433 free lunches.

Kylee OBB VISTA explains paper plate campaign

We spoke with participants about public benefits and free tax preparation. We also introduced them to The Paper Plate Campaign is an opportunity for Ohioans to share personal stories regarding their daily lives and the trials they are facing. We ask that your organization distribute paper plates to your clients and ask them to write down their current situation, including the choices their family has been forced to make and what would happen if they did not have access to a foodbank or food pantry.

Lillian OBB Volunteer post paper plates on wall

Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks will provide all participating organizations with paper plates, writing utensils, and prepaid postage to send back the completed paper plates. This truly is a powerful way to visually show the critical need for state funding and what could happen if funding is no longer provided. So learn more about the Paper Plate Campaign and join us today!
